RICS pathways

The RICS
The RICS

Still no news from the RICS about the changes in pathways and entry requirement revisions flagged up by the institution last year. The announcement was followed by a series of round table debates with members that anecdotally left many concerned about the proposed changes. Perhaps last week we got a snapshot of what the RICS is planning when Justin Young and Martin Samworth the chief executive and chairman, respectively, of the RICS gave a bizarre interview to a national newspaper at MIPIM.

Samworth commented that the RICS should be aiming to double its membership, by appealing to more people working in property, beyond just quantity surveyors and estate agents. According to the chairman the world is now full of; sustainability people, data scientists and property technology specialists, who should be accommodated as RICS members. 'We have to find different pathways to enable them to become members.'

In another interesting statement Young stated the property industry is dominated by middle class ex-public schoolboys - really ?? The RICS is working to change that by developing different methods of getting into the profession. ‘If you can’t afford to go to university, that shouldn’t stop you from becoming a chartered surveyor, you just need to do it in a different way.’

Where does the RICS find these people ?
